Wolfenden and Powery exceed expectations during NORCECA volleyball tournament

While the Cayman Islands entered a total of five teams into the Security Centre NORCECA Beach Volleyball Tournament, it was duo Jessica Wolfenden and Caymanian Ileann Powery that were the last players standing for their country over the weekend.

Wolfenden and Powery, who were placed in Pool D with the Dominican Republic, Mexico and St. Kitts and Nevis, took second in their group, after tallying up 91 points and securing several wins.

Their performance would see them advance to the quarterfinals against Canada’s Amanda Harnett and Marie-Alex Bélanger, who went on to win bronze following their QF 2-0 (21-14, 21-17) win against Wolfenden and Powery.

Following that loss, the Cayman team would go on to play El Salvador in the losers’ semifinals, which guaranteed the winner of that to play for fifth or sixth place. Cayman would fall short in what was a competitive showing that ended 1-2 (14-21, 21-12, 8-15).

Playing for seventh and eighth, Wolfenden and Powery would finish on a high, winning 0-2 (20-22, 19-21) and placing seventh out of 17 teams in the women’s overall standings.
