Bodden Town Football Club came up short in their efforts to capture the Cayman Island Football Association Charity Shield against Scholars ISC Sunday (January 9) night at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Defending league champions Scholars defeated Bodden Town 2-1 after normal time (90 minutes). It marked the second straight season that Bodden Town was unsuccessful, after losing their 2020-21 charity shield match against Latinos FC 1-0.
Meanwhile, Scholar’s Jarol Smith, who previously captained Latinos last season enjoyed lifting the prestigious CIFA shield for the second consecutive season.
Smith scored the first goal Sunday night for his new team following an assist by Kimani Finn in the 28th minute.
Smith would again make a key contribution in the 36 minute, crossing the ball from centre pitch to teammate Dwight Dunk, who made good on his attempt at goal.
In the second half, Bodden Town’s Breshawn Watson beat Scholars goalie in the 76th minute but his efforts was deemed offside by the linesman, keeping the score 2-0.
In the 88th minute Bodden Town’s Matthew Suberan denied Scholars a clean sheet win after he scored a free kick about 22-yards out to end the game 2-1.
Scholars is scheduled to face Alliance this Sunday (January 16) for the opening round of the CIFA Men’s Premier League. Bodden Town will also play their first round match against Latinos. Both matches will take place at the Ed Bush stadium.
