Two teams highly favoured to win the 2021-22 Cayman Islands Football Association Women’s league settled their first score Sunday (January 9) evening at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex, with Sunset Football Club claiming victory over defending league champions Elite Sports Club.
Sunset introduced two new players to their starting lineup; one of which was Shanice Monteith who was in fact Elite’s team captain last season. However, despite the veteran’s transfer, there was mutual respect shown after her former team lost 2-1.
During the competitive match, Sunset took lead first after Natalia Cor-Moore opened with a goal in the 22nd minute. But just before the half time whistle blew, Elite’s Ethana Villalobos brought the game level, 1-1.
Sunset’s Alexia Bromfield, who is currently a player on the Cayman Islands under-20 national lineup sealed the deal for her team with 15 minutes left, capitalising on a rebound to close the game 2-1.
The CIFA women’s league is scheduled to kickoff this Saturday (January 15) with Elite facing Latinos FC, Scholars ISC vs Fusion SC and Sunset has received a bye. Both games will be played at the Ed Bush Stadium in West Bay.
