The 2021 Junior Pan American Games has come to an end for Cayman’s swimmers. Representing the country at the inaugural competition was four of Cayman’s long course national record holders.
Raya Embury-Brown, who holds the national record for 1500 metre free with a time of 17:50.66 dived into action at the Aquatics Centre in Cali, Colombia, swimming in four events. Embury-Brown, 17, made the B finals following her heats.
Jordan Crooks, who holds the national record in 50m back with a time of 26.94, narrowly missed a podium place during the games. Crooks, 19, finished fourth in the 100 free A finals at 50.78 seconds, behind Mexico’s Andres Dupont Cabrera who finished only .41 seconds ahead of Crooks. Crooks also made the 50m free A finals where he finished eighth.
Kyra Rabess, who holds the national record in the 400m free, with a time of 4:27.16 achieved a PB in the 100 free at the Cali Games. Rabess, 17, swam 59.16 seconds in her second heat, placing 20th overall for the 100 free. Rabess made the B finals in several other events.
Jillian Crooks, who holds the national record in both the 100m free (57.32) and 50m fly (28.72), clocked in four PBs during the competition. Crooks, 14, the younger sister of Jordan and Cayman’s youngest Olympian secured PBs during the B finals in the 200 free, 100 back, 50 free and the 200IM.
Note* the A finals consist of the top eight athletes following times registered from the preliminary swims.
