Cayman’s national junior cyclists’ Nathaniel Forbes and Victor Magalhaes left Wednesday morning to compete at two cycling events being held this month in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, with hopes of qualifying for the 2021 Pan-American Youth Games.
From 11-15 Aug., Forbes, 19, and Magalhaes, 21, will compete at the Caribbean Cycling Championships (CCC), followed by the Pan-Am Cycling Championships.
Before leaving Cayman, the two men received a donation from Craig’s Cycles (CC), which will assist during their road races abroad.
“I don’t forget where I come from,” said owner of CC, Craig Merren. “It makes me proud to be a part of their journey as it did for many of Cayman cyclist over the last 39+years.”
Merren, a three-time Olympic cyclist and now businessman, donated continental tires, tubes and water bottles. He said it reminded him of when he was growing up and his siblings needed a helping hand.
“Giving these two talented Caymanian riders equipment really takes me back when my brother Perri & sister Merilyn along with Mitch, Brooks and Pascal went around looking for sponsors to purchase tires, tubes, wheels and other cycling gear back in the day”
Forbes, will compete in the CCC road race, followed by Magalhaes, who will make his debut in the CCC U23 individual time trial. Once the CCC are finished, both cyclists will race in the PanAm U23 Championship Road Race.
