Shalysa Wray, made her olympic debut Monday (August 2) night, running an outdoor personal best of 53.61 at the Olympic Stadium. She became the first athlete from the Cayman Islands to run the 400 metres at the Summer Olympic Games.
She was one of only two athletes representing Cayman in athletics; the other being three time Olympian Kemar Hyman. Both Wray and Hyman finished 7th in their respective heats with times that did not qualify for the semi-finals.
Marileidy Paulino from the Dominican Republic, who won Wray’s heat with a time of 50.06, qualified for the semi-finals and her proven track record could see her go beyond that.
While Wray’s Olympic participation has come to a halt, she achieved her goal, which was to “finish healthy and run a personal record.”
The 22 year old will now set her sights on the World Championships in 2022.
