Rutty solidifies place as Cayman’s first Olympic gymnast

Raegan Rutty has officially etched her name in the history books for the Cayman Islands, after becoming the first Caymanian gymnast ever to represent the country at the Summer Olympic Games.

Rutty competed Saturday, 24 July, in the All-Around, Subdivision 1 (out of 5). She scored 12.133 in vault, 8.566 uneven bars, 8.283 balance beam and 10.633 for floor, totalling a score of 39.615. Her scores were not enough to advance into the semifinals.

“Proud to say…I am the Cayman Islands first ever olympic gymnast,” Rutty stated on social media following her performance.

Rutty was the first of the Cayman Olympic team which consist of five athletes to compete at the Tokyo Games. Next up, is swimmer Jillian Crooks, who will make her Olympic debut on Wednesday when she competes in the first round of the women’s 100-metres freestyle.
