Sports minister presents national flag to CICO ahead of the Olympic Games

Minister for Sports, Bernie Bush followed the time-honoured tradition of presenting the Cayman Islands national flag to the Cayman Islands Olympic Committee (CICO) this past Saturday (July 10).

The brief ceremony, held at the Westin hotel saw Bush present the flag to the committee’s Chef de Mission, Janet Sairsingh.

“Having previously been an Olympic Committee executive committee member for many years, I understand the importance of having the athletes know that the Minister of Sports and their government are one hundred per cent behind them,” said Bush.

The ceremony was attended by the Ministry’s Chief Officer Teresa Echenique, who will be joining the national delegation at the Tokyo Olympics in Japan, CIOC President Lori Powell and the CIOC Secretary General Carson Ebanks.

Olympic hopefuls: Jillian Crooks, 15, (100m freestyle); Brett Fraser, 31, (50m freestyle); Kemar Hyman Oly, 31, (100m); Raegan Rutty, 19, (gymnastics), and Shalysa Wray, 22, (400m), will shortly meet up with the Chef de Mission Sairsingh in Miami. The 11-person delegation, including coaches and support staff, will then undergo two rounds of COVID-19 testing before flying to Tokyo in less than two weeks.

“We congratulate and wish them every success in what will probably be one of the greatest sporting events of their careers,” said Bush.
