John Gray High School retained its place as Inter-Secondary Schools Sports Champions after two days (March 11-12) of grueling competition at the Truman Bodden Sports Complex.
Outstanding performances from fourteen-year-old Devonte Howell, who won the under 16 boys 100-meter dash in 10.81 seconds and secured gold medals in the U16 200-metre dash, 400-metre run, the 4×100 and 4×400 relays, helped the school to celebrate another victory.
Head of the Local Organising Committee, Mrs. Gloria Bell, congratulated the school for its victory and lauded the days’ performances. “I must congratulate the team from John Gray High School for winning yet another Inter-Secondary School Sports Championship. Congratulations also to all our participating schools for your tremendous efforts and the high level of sportsmanship you displayed throughout this meet. Over the past two days, we have witnessed some marvellous performances from our young athletes, and I can safely say that the future of sports looks quite bright.”
Other outstanding performers included Cayman Academy’s Mikael Hall and Renia Smith from Cayman Islands Further Education Centre (CIFEC). Mikael scored 34 points, having won the U12 400 metre run, the 100-meter dash, and placing second and third in the 200-meter run and boys’ U12 long jump, respectively. Renia received gold in the girls U 18 100 meter dash, the 200-meter run, U18 girls’ long jump and the 4×100 m relay.
A handful of homeschoolers, along with students from thirteen educational institutions, participated in the well-supported event.
Among those in attendance were the Ministry of Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands (MEYSAL) Acting Chief Officer Ms. Lyneth Monteith, who presented several medals, including those to winners of the Cheerleading competition – Clifton Hunter High School.
Other notable attendees included MEYSAL Deputy Chief Officer Mr. Joel Francis, who declared the event open and new Director of Sports Mr. Kurt Hyde, who delivered opening remarks. Local Olympian Mr. Kemar Hyman was also on hand to deliver remarks. Minister of Financial Services & Home Affairs Hon. Tara Rivers and retired Olympian Ms. Cydonie Mothersille were also in attendance.
