Roma Fusion’s Brianna Williams brought her team level with less than 10 minutes left on the clock against Scholars ISC Saturday (31 October) night at the Ed Bush Stadium.
The round six fixture in the Cayman Islands Football Association Women’s League kicked off with both teams having their fair share of possession but very few breakaways.
However, just before halftime, Scholars’ Staysy Velasquez-Bennett scored the opener off the assist by teammate Kimberley Pitta-Thomas in the 41st minute, to bring the game 1-0.

It seemed as though Scholars would see out a 1-0 victory during the second half, holding a strong back line. That was until Roma’s Brianna Williams was subbed in.
Williams was initially denied by keeper Maritza Miller-McLaughlin on her first attempt at goal but Miller-McLaughlin was unable to hold the ball which Williams capitalised on, to bring the game 1-1 in the 82nd minute.
However, the late drama didn’t end there, as an altercation between Williams and Scholars defender Kaela Ebanks erupted shortly after the equalising goal; leading to both Williams and her coach, Olsen Bush receiving yellow cards.
“Often times in the competitive element of the sport, a lot of people lose their cool and unfortunately that emerged tonight but I don’t have any more comment on that,” said Bush after the game.
Scholars’ head coach Mario Watler also commented after the game and suggested the result could have been different.
“We only had one sub on the bench,” said Watler. “The girls haven’t been coming out to training like they should, with only six or five showing up each training session. So the last 15 or 20 minutes is when they started to deteriorate, getting tired and once your legs can’t go anymore you lose concentration and that’s what happened.”
