Good start for Elite in the women’s league

Elite SC finally hit the pitch Sunday (11 October) night after missing rounds 1 and 2 in the Cayman Islands Football Association (CIFA) Women’s League. The 2019-2020 league winners’ return featured a 5-0 victory over Latinos, who has been on a humiliating losing streak.

Previously, Elite was scheduled to play against Roma Fusion in round 2. However, their match was called off due to unpleasant weather conditions at the time which aligned them to play their round 3 fixture against Latinos first.

To the surprise of many fans in attendance, Latinos were able to keep their defense secured for majority of the first half and while they deserve credit for their efforts; the opening goal eventually came on the 30-minute mark from Elites’ Thana Villalobos. Three minutes later, teammate Nessah Godet scored again.

It seemed as though Latinos lost focus, not to mention one of their players leaving the Ed Bush stadium in an ambulance. It came following an incident where the ball was kicked and connected directly into the respective player’s face, leaving her concuss according to CIFA officials.

However, the damage was far from over, as Elite’s Shanice Montieth produced a hat trick; giving the spanish team no time for a comeback. Montieth scored once in the 68th minute, again in the 79th and closed the game with another during added time (90+).

Additionally, Sunset defeated Scholars 2-0 in their round 3 match. Sunset’s Chloe Bentick contributed to her top scoring credentials in the 39th minute followed by teammate Lauren Scott in the 43rd.

Week 4 will feature Elite vs Sunset in what many considers to be a highly competitive match-up. That match will kickoff at the Annex, Sunday (18 October) evening at 5pm. Meanwhile, Latinos will try to capture their first win in the women’s league when they face Roma Fusion.
