Popeyes wins flag football CoEd Gold Cup

Popeyes etched their names in the history books following an impressive performance in the Cayman Islands Flag Football 2020 Burger King CoEd Playoffs. After dominating the 9-time champions (Burger Shack) in the semi-finals Friday (25 September) night; Popeyes moved on to win the Gold Cup in a competitive final against Shottas at the Ed Bush Stadium.

Popeyes got off to a good start, taking the lead early in the game. However, Shottas’ Chelsea Green rallied up mid-way through the match scoring a touchdown, followed by teammate Oliver Parker who secured his second touchdown for his team. Despite their efforts, Popeyes refuse to be denied and turned up their offensive play late in the game with strikes from Larue Nixon and Paul Chin.

Popeyes held their defensive ground till the final whistle, ending the match 28-19. Following the game, the team was awarded the CoEd season trophy with Gold Cup MVP honours going to their own Lisa Malice and Larue Nixon.

In addition, BNPs BBQ won the Silver Cup after defeating Cayman Auto 36-8 in the finals. BNP’s Vania Cornwall was named female MVP for the Silver Cup Finals, while Michael Smikle earned male MVP.

The Cayman Islands Flag Football Association will resume it’s competition in the Mixing Bowl League sometime this month, featuring the first ever drafted 8-player league on the men’s side and 6-player league on the women’s side.
