Éire Og suffers first defeat

Week six in the 2020 Harney’s Gaelic Football League featured huge underdog’s Na Fianna defeating league leader’s Éire Og 14-11. The game kicked off at Cayman International School field this past Sunday (13 September). Éire Og came into the game undefeated; winning five consecutive games while Na Fianna loss three out of their last five.

The underdogs got off to a good start leading by 7 points at half time. In the second half, Éire Og started to gain momentum with Colin Nestor, scoring six times. However, the game was put to bed with Na Fianna’s Rich Harwood’s fifth goal of the season after some robust play from teammate Will Egan through the middle of the pitch. The game ended, Na Fianna 1-11 (14), Éire Óg 1-8 (11).

Meanwhile in the women’s division, league leader’s Na Piarsaigh kept their undefeated streak alive after winning a close game against Harps that ended 7-6. Na Piarsaigh’s Lisa Kemp and Selena Travers put their team ahead early in the match scoring respectively. Just before half time, Harps’ forward Anne Bjorge was awarded a penalty but did not reap the benefit after a heroic save by Na Piarsaigh’s goalkeeper Niamh Mckinstry. Despite Harps efforts in the second half, the game ended Na Piarsaigh 1-4 (7), Harps 1-3 (6).

In other games

In the men’s division, Wolfe Tones 1-5 (8) defeated Gabriels 0-7 (7), Cú Chulainns 2-2 (8) beat Shamrocks 0-6 (6) and Western Gaels 1-8 (11) won against Cavan Gaels 0-6 (6) who has not won a single game since the league commenced.

In the women’s division, Buffer’s Alley 0-9 (9) captured their first win in a big way after defeating Oliver Plunketts 0-3 (3) while Bredagh 1-5 (8) captured a close win over Sarsfields 2-1 (7).

The league’s week seven matches will kickoff at 11am this Sunday (20 September) at Cayman International School field.
