The Cayman Islands hopes of participating in the 2022 FIFA World Cup starts this October in the opening round of the Concacaf qualifiers.
Concacaf held its preliminary draw today (19 August) and announced that Cayman will play in Group B against favourites Canada, along with Bermuda, Aruba and Suriname in the opening round.
Each team will play all their opposition in their group once, playing a total of four matches; two home and two away. The games will be played within the FIFA match windows; October 2020 through November 2020. At the end of the First Round the six group winners will progress to the Second Round.
Cayman is currently ranked 29th in Concacaf. They will face off against Suriname, in an away match on Wednesday 7, October. Then they will host Canada on Sunday 11, October. Cayman will then travel to face Aruba Sunday 11, November and finish out at home against Bermuda on Tuesday 17, November.
“This is a very exciting draw,” said Cayman Islands national team coach Ben Pugh. “We’re looking forward to measuring ourselves verses some good opponents.”
Cayman will be looking to follow up on one of their best performances in their CNL campaign where they won four games and nearly earned a promotion to League B.
